The most important private collection of early Gustav Stickley furniture ever to be sold at auction, The La Hacienda Collection of Decorative Arts has been entrusted to the Treadway/Toomey Auction partnership. On May 20, 2012, collectors will have an exclusive opportunity to bid on early Gustav Stickley furnishings and decorative arts never before seen by individuals outside of this private family estate.
In Buffalo Park, Colorado along the South Platte River, “La Hacienda,” or Spanish Estates, was designed and constructed by prominent Denver architect Frederick Sterner. In July 1902 the commission was decorated with Gustav Stickley furniture, William Morris wallpaper, and outfitted with Indian artifacts, an extensive book collection, as well as Caproni plaster sculptural reliefs above several fireplaces. All of these items have remained intact throughout the nationally recognized historic homestead.
The owner’s taste in furniture was influenced by their travel to the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. The earliest set of furniture purchased for La Hacienda was from G.W. Richardson’s & Son’s in Auburn, New York; one of the first retail establishments to offer Gustav Stickley furniture. Records indicate that in 1902 additional Gustav Stickley furniture was requested specifically from G.W. Richardson’s & Son’s. The pieces included an Eastwood book cabinet, #525, a Smoker’s cabinet, #522, a mirror, #608, and a rocker, #2635. These items, including the other previously ordered pieces were delivered upon their creation between 1901 and 1902, and have never been away from the La Hacienda compound until now.
