Harwell Hamilton Harris (American, 1903-1990) architectural drawing, for the Weston Havens House, California, pencil and colored pencil on paper, 8.25”h x 11”w 1500-2000 Harris worked in the office of Richard Neutra from 1928 to 1932 before establishing his own practice in 1933. Inspired by the work of Greene and Greene and Bernard Maybeck, Harris developed a regional style that integrated Modernist principles with a sensitivity to site and materials. In 1940-41 Harris designed what is often considered his masterpiece, the Weston Havens house, a dramatic geometric form of inverted gables hovering above San Francisco Bay in Berkeley, CA. Harris hired a San Francisco photographer to shoot the Havens house, but with disappointing results. It is a measure of his reputation at the time that he finally used Man Ray as the principal photographer for the site. When they met, Harris asked Man Ray if he had ever photographed a house, and when Man Ray responded that he had not, Harris said, “Then you’re just the man I need.” The following seven photographs of the Weston Havens House were taken by Man Ray in Berkeley, CA, in 1942. We believe these to be unique examples. Images copyright © Man Ray Trust ARS-ADAGP Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York / ADAGP, Paris REF: Harwell Hamilton Harris, by Lisa Germany, 2000
