628. Cassilly Adams (American, 1843-1921), Winter Trail, watercolor/paper, 14.25 x 18.25, signed. Adams was born in Zanesville, Ohio, and studied under Thomas S. Noble at the Cincinnati Art School. He fought in the Civl War and was wounded at Vicksburg. Adams executed his most famous work, Custers Last Fight in 1884-1885. This painting was exhibited across the country and gained Adams recognition as a historically important artist of the American West. The painting was formally presented to the Seventh Regiment of the United States Calvary, and hung at Fort Bliss until it was destroyed by a fire in 1946. Adams maintained a studio in St Louis from 1878-1885. Anheuser-Busch Brewing Company reproduced this image as a chromolithograph and released it widely to the public. Native American culture was Adams favorite and also most successful subject matter. He painted compelling portrayals of the Cheyenne, Sioux, and Plains tribes. His work is included in the collections of the Amon Carter Museum, Buffalo Bill Historical Society, Woodcock Museum, and the Shelburne Museum. |
