Cole was influenced by William Morris and the French Barbizon masters, and specialized in pastoral scenes in the Barbizon style. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design (1863-1892); Paris Salon (1860s-70s); Boston Athenaeum; Boston Art Club, and the Royal Academy (London).
