577. John Hauser (American, 1858-1913), Indian Rider, c. 1902; gouache/paper, 13.5" x 9.5", signed and dated. Cincinnati painter. Hauser studied at the Ohio Mechanics Institute, McMicken Art School, and the Cincinnati Art Academy (1872). He specialized in western subjects, making annual visits to Arizona and New Mexico, beginning in 1891. In 1901, he was adopted as a Sioux indian and named, Straight White Shield. His work is in the collections of the Smithsonian and the Gilcrease Museum. 8,000-10,000
