560. George Henry Bogert (American, 1864-1944), "View of Venice", c.1895; oil/canvas, 28" x 40", signed, excellent original ornate frame. Well known for his atmospheric, tonalist works, influenced by Eugene Boudin. Bogert studied at the National Academy of Design and in Paris. He also worked with Thomas Eakins when he returned from Paris, in 1888. Bogert's works were romantic, but not overly sentimental. He fashioned himself as a Barbizon painter. He was a member of the Lotos Club, Salmagundi Club, and the National Academy of Design. He exhibited extensively from the 1880s-1900s, and his work is in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, Boston Museum, St Louis Art Museum, National Gallery, and the Metropolitan Museum. 2000-3000
