723. Doris Lee (American, 1905-1983), "Drying Tobacco", c. 1935; oil/canvas, 27" x 33", signed. Important American Scene painter. Lee worked in a deliberately "folk" style, and painted everyday subjects. Lee studied at the Kansas City Art Institute with Ernest Lawson, in Paris with Andre Lhote, and in San Francisco with Arnold Blanch (whom she later married). She exhibited from the 1930s-50s, at the Art Institute of Chicago, Corcoran Gallery, Worlds Fair New York, and the Whitney Museum. Lee won national attention when her work won the Frank Logan Prize at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1935, and the sponsor of the prize denounced the work as "atrocious", and began the Sanity in Art Movement against modern art. This is the finest example of this artist's work we have seen offered at auction, and an outstanding American Scene painting. 10,000-15,000
