1450. Marshall D. Smith (American, early 20th century), "Zoeless", c.1966; a group of 57 drawings, some with handwritten letters on verso, each 11" x 8.5", all of the letters are signed, and many of the drawings. Chicago WPA painter. Smith exhibited in the 1930s at the Art Institute of Chicago. Smith worked in Chicago, New Orleans, and Venice, and painted primarily street scenes and figurative work. These letters and sketches are correspondences between Smith and apparently the mother of "Zoe", whom the artist loves, but it is a love that is not reciprocated. The content is interesting and humorous, as Smith uses metaphor and innuendo, both in his illustrations and in his written word, in his account of the interaction between Zoe and himself. 3000-5000
