1418. Charles Conner (American, 1857-1905), "The Midnight Oil" , c.1880-1890; a sketchbook of 90 drawings by Conner, compiled by John D. Nixon (Nixon was the leading collector and patron of Indiana art for many years). The notebook dimension is 15" x 13" overall ("Midnight Oil" is 8" x 11") Conner was an important early painter associated with the Richmond, Indiana group of painters. He traveled west to California, executing landscapes. It is likely that many later oils were derived from these preliminary sketches. His work is in the collection of the Indiana Museum of Art. Most of the locations of the sketches are noted by the artist, and many are signed and dated.
Note: This sketchbook also includes one pencil drawing by Conner's friend and fellow artist, John Elwood Bundy (American, 1853-1933), of sheep. It is signed. 6000-8000 |
