769. Clarence Holbrook Carter (American, b. 1904), “Landscape”, c.1941; oil/canvas, 24" x 40", signed and dated. Important modernist painter. Carter studied at the Cleveland School of Art and with Hans Hofmann in Italy. He exhibited extensively from the 1920s-40s, at the Museum of Modern Art, Art Institute of Chicago, Metropolitan Museum, Corcoran Gallery, and the Detroit Art Institute. His work is in the collections of numerous museums, and he taught at the Carnegie Institute, Cleveland Art Institute, and the Minneapolis Art Institute. 4000-6000
