752. Ludwig Bemelmans (American, 1898-1963), Portrait in Yellow, c.1957; oil/canvas, 22" x 18", signed and dated, excellent original frame. Important painter and illustrator of childrens books. Bemelmans exhibited in New York, London, and at the Art Institute of Chicago, but is best known for the series of Madeline books which he wrote and illustrated. He also was a contributor of illustrations and editorials to The New Yorker, Vogue, McCalls, Town & Country, and Holiday. Bemelmans rented a room and studio in Ville-d Avray, which is located halfway between Paris and Versailles. It was in an old hotel and tavern, known as Hostellerie Cabassud. He resided there from 1954-58. It was here he painted Portrait in Yellow, which is a powerful image and an excellent example of the post-war Paris School of painting.
