688. Albert Bierstadt (American, 1830-1902), “Coastal Scene with Sailboats”, c.1865; watercolor/paper, 3.5" x 7.5", initialed, “AB”, lower right. Bierstadt was born in Germany, but his family emigrated to the U.S. when he was just two. His desire to study art brought him back to Dusseldorf to study twenty-one years later. He remained there for four years before returning to the U.S., settling in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. He painted the Hudson River Valley, and also made trips west on painting expeditions.
