Coats studied at the Herron School of Art and the Cincinnati Art Academy, with Forsyth, Duveneck, and Hopkins. He exhibited at the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts (Paris), Art Institute of Chicago, John Herron Art Institute, Chicago Gallery Association, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art.
