486. Alfred Thompson Bricher (American, 1837-1908), “Distant Sails”, c. 1880; oil/canvas, 24" x 20", signed, well framed. Provenance: The collection of Vincent Price , St. Louis, Missouri. Highly important American marine painter. Bricher grew up in Boston. He was largely self-taught, although influenced by the style of Fitz Hugh Lane. He became a professional artist in 1858, and ten years later moved to New York. During the 1870s-80s, he painted the coastline of Massachussetts. Rhode Island, and Long Island. He exhibited at the Boston Athenaeum, National Academy of Design, Brooklyn Art Association, Art Institute of Chicago, and the Boston Art Club. 30,000-50,000
