| 478. Alexis Fournier (American, 1865-1948), Campsite beside the Waterfall, c. 1889; oil/canvas, 34" x 27", signed. Fournier trained in Minneapolis and France, and was primarily a landscape painter. His body of work could be seen to represent three distinct periods. His early work, such as this example, is consistent with late 19th century traditional landscape painting. After traveling to Paris, he adopted a style influenced by the Barbizon painters, which accounted for the majority of his production. Finally, painting in Indiana and upstate New York, he turned to a much looser style of regional impressionism. Fournier was a member of the Roycrofters in East Aurora, New York. He exhibited at the Hoosier Salon, National Academy of Design, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, Art Institute of Chicago, and the Buffalo Art Club. He also painted in Brown County, Indiana. 3000-5000 | ||||||
