693. Newell Convers Wyeth (American, 1882-1945), “Legend of the Expedition to Spain”, c.1928; oil/canvas, 40.25" x 34", signed; titled verso. Highly important American illustrator. Wyeth was Howard Pyle’s most famous student. He executed more than 3,000 illustrations for articles, posters, and books, and flourished in the “Golden Age of Illustration”. His best known work was for the Saturday Evening Post, Scribner’s and Ladie’s Home Journal. This painting was illustrated for Elizabeth and Essex, by Lytton Strachey, and was published in Ladie’s Home Journal, October, 1928. The Earl of Essex (Robert Devereux) led an expedition to Spain in 1596 for Queen Elizabeth and enjoyed many military successes in his campaign there. This work is included in the Catalogue Raisonne of Wyeth (#1821), compiled by the Brandywine River Museum and Consevatory, Chadds Ford, PA. 60,000-80,000
