| 663. Elizabeth Nourse (American, 1859-1938), “Maternity”, c.1890; oil/canvas, 18" x 22.75", signed. Cincinnati’s most famous woman painter. Nourse studied with Mary Spencer in the mid 1870s, and then with Thomas Noble. In 1887, she left for Paris to study, but ended up making that city her home. She gained a reputation for her figure paintings almost immediately, both in the United States and in France, especially her depictions of mother and child. Nourse was a member of the Society Nationale des Beaux-Arts, Cincinnati Women’s Pottery Club, National Association of Women Artists, and the Women’s Art Association (Paris). She exhibited internationally from the 1880s-1910s, and her work is in the collections of the Cincinnati Art Museum, Art Institute of Chicago, Luxembourg Museum (Paris), and the National Gallery.
