489. William Rickerby Miller (American, 1818-1893), “Mississippi Sunset”, c. 1852; oil/canvas, 14" x 19", signed; inscribed on stretcher, “Beavoir Miss”. Miller exhibited at the National Academy of Design as early as the 1840s. He began to enjoy success as a painter and illustrator by the 1850s.

490. William Henry Hilliard (American, 1836-1905), “A French Country House with a Figure of a Woman”, c. 1882; oil/canvas laid down on board, 23" x 16", signed. Hilliard was active in Indiana in the 1860s-70s, painting primarily landscapes. In the late 1870s, he moved to New York, and eventually settled in Washington, D.C. He painted in Paris from 1880-83, and exhibited at the Paris Salon. It is likely that this work was executed during his trip to France.

499. Etienne Prosper Berne-Bellecour (French, 1838-1910), “The French Sailor”, c.1880; oil/panel, 14" x 10", signed, nicely framed. Berne-Bellecour enlisted in the French regiment known as the Franc-Tireurs (or, “Snipers of the Seine”) during the Franco-Prussian War, and his interest in military subjects dominated his body of work after that experience. Many of his clients were high-ranking French officers during the 1870s.

500. Daniel Sherrin (British, 1870-1942), “Coastal Scene”, c.1910; oil/canvas, 20" x 36", signed. Sherrin painted in the “Garden of England” style, and was influenced by the later work of B.W. Leader. He painted landscapes and seascapes.
