| 718. Ludwig Sander (American, 1906-1975), Athabascan, c. 1974; oil/canvas, 22" x 40", signed, titled, numbered (135), and dated on reverse. Sander studied with Archipenko and G.E. Browne, and at the Art Students League (1930), before going to work with Hans Hofmann in Munich for six months in 1932. He exhibited at the Leo Castelli Gallery, Kootz Gallery, and M. Knoedler & Co. His work is in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, Whitney Museum, San Francisco Museum of Art, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Andrew Hudson, in an essay for an exhibition of Sanders work at Knoedler, says, This important vertical, always placed off-center; usually accompanied by an answering subsidiary horizontal, becomes the key element around which Sanders subsequent art evolves. 1000-2000 | ||||||
