| 506. Louis Leopold Boilly (French, 1761-1845), In the Studio, c. 1840; oil/canvas, 20" x 24", signed. Provenance: Christies London, March 18, 1960, Important Pictures by Old Masters, lot 112 (xerox of the catalog listing accompanies the lot). Boilly was the son of a wood-carver from Douai. In 1778, he went to Arras to receive painting instruction from Dominique Doncre. He moved to Paris in 1785, and executed a series of paintings for an important Avignon collector, Esprit-Claude-Francois Calvet. He exhibited at the Salon between 1791-1824, and received a gold medal at the Salon of 1804. His genre subjects were extremely popular with collectors and the general public. In 1833, he was admitted to the Legion d Honneur and the Institut de France. 30,000-50,000 | ||||||
