PREV. 506. Louis Leopold Boilly (French, 1761-1845), “In the Studio”, c. 1840; oil/canvas, 20" x 24", signed. Provenance: Christie’s London, March 18, 1960, Important Pictures by Old Masters, lot 112 (xerox of the catalog listing accompanies the lot). Boilly was the son of a wood-carver from Douai. In 1778, he went to Arras to receive painting instruction from Dominique Doncre. He moved to Paris in 1785, and executed a series of paintings for an important Avignon collector, Esprit-Claude-Francois Calvet. He exhibited at the Salon between 1791-1824, and received a gold medal at the Salon of 1804. His genre subjects were extremely popular with collectors and the general public. In 1833, he was admitted to the Legion d’ Honneur and the Institut de France. 30,000-50,000
