574. Olga Costa (German/Mexican, 1913-1994), "Cabeza de Maya", c.1960; oil/board, 20" x 16", signed. Well known female painter of the mid to late 20th century in Mexico. She preferred subjects that were a departure from the traditional political themes of mural art in Mexico. Costa was born in Leipzig, Germany, and her family immigrated to Mexico in 1925. She studied briefly with Carlos Merida at the National School of Plastic Arts. She married painter Jose Chavez in the late 1930s. She exhibited from the 1940s-70s, at the Gallery of Mexican Art and the Gallery of Contemporary Art. 5000-7000
