494. Astley David Middleton Cooper (American, 1856-1924), "Danae", c.1890; oil/canvas, 42" x 70", signed, provenance. Cooper studied in St. Louis, at Washington University. Cooper worked as an illustrator for Leslie's and gained public recognition for a series of illustrations he did of Indian portraits in 1877. Cooper moved to San Jose, California in 1883, and painted mostly western subjects, but he did execute large nudes which were sold to saloons in exchange for his drinking debts. 3000-5000
