484. Sir Edward (Coley) Burne-Jones attribution (British, 1833-1898), "Ariadne Discrowns Herself (Romola, Chapter 36)", c.1865; oil/canvas, 37" x 28", signed; titled with "copyright reserved" verso, unframed. Burne-Jones was a leading figure in the second phase of the Pre-Raphaelite movement. He was also a leading figure in the Aesthetic Movement and International Symbolism. Much of Burne-Jones' work is closely tied with literature, both classical and contemporary . He, along with his lifelong friend, William Morris, shared an enthusiasm for the writings of John Ruskin, who advocated the idea of art using allegory and symbolism to offer insights into the nature of God. The somber, monochrome palette, lack of depth and general disconcern for light and shadow effects seen in this work are typical for the artist. 10,000-20,000
