Enrique Alferez spent time in the army of Pancho Villa in the Mexican Revolution before coming to the United States. He studied with Chicago sculptor Lorado Taft in the 1920s. In 1928, he was commissioned by John Root of Holabird & Root to carve decorative wood panels for the Palmolive Building, Chicago. Alfrerez moved to New Orleans in 1929, where he undertook many public and private commissions.

This original structure of the Ceylon Court residence, Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, was formerly the Singhalese Villa from the Ceylon government at the Columbian Exposition at Chicago, 1893. At the close of the exhibition, the structure was purchased by F.R. Chandler, who had it dismantled and moved to Lake Geneva, where it was rebuilt on property on Mannings Point. The building was a reproduction of a Buddhist temple and was constructed of woods native to Ceylon. The architect of the Villa was listed as H.F. Tomalin. A copy of Lake Geneva: Newport of the West with information about the estate and photographs is included with the lot.

In 1927, Finnish-born Eliel Saarinen was one of nine architects invited by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York to design thirteen room settings for The Architect and the Industrial Arts, an exhibition of contemporary American design. The organizers requested that all furnishings and accessories for a room be included, and they stipulated that no object to be displayed could already be in production. For the exhibit, Eliel Saarinen created a dining room outfitted with four new patterns of flatware that were displayed on the dining room table, including “Contempora”.Saarinen's flatware garnered critical acclaim, but the pattern was not a commercial success and was withdrawn from the market after only a few years.

Count Alexis de Sakhnoffsky (1901-1964) immigrated to the US from Russia after the Bolshevik revolution. He was hired by Packard to redesign their automotive line. He also designed furniture and other items for clients including Emerson’s BD-197 radio, nicknamed the "Mae West."

This streamlined dining set was designed for Bloomingdales in 1939 and installed at the House of Tomorrow Exhibit part of the Town of Tomorrow, which featured a variety of modern and futuristic concepts for design and living spaces at the World’s Fair in New York.

The Beaubourg chair was conceived by Richard Rogers and Renzo Piano and designed specifically for the Pompidou Center in Paris. The final form was created by Cadestin and Laurent and chosen as the winning chair for the commission by a jury headed by Jean Prouve.
