In 1927, Finnish-born Eliel Saarinen was one of nine architects invited by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York to design thirteen room settings for The Architect and the Industrial Arts, its eleventh exhibition of contemporary American design. The organizers requested that all furnishings and accessories for a room be included, and they stipulated that no object to be displayed could already be in production. For the exhibit, Eliel Saarinen created a dining room outfitted with four new patterns of flatware that were displayed on the dining room table, including “Contempora”.

The flatware prototype of Contempora was made by Dominick and Haff, a New York subsidiary of Reed and Barton of Taunton, Massachusetts. The pattern was comprised of a seven-piece place setting (fish fork, salad fork, dinner fork, fish knife, dinner knife, teaspoon, and tablespoon) and featured a skyscraper-inspired design.

The Metropolitan Museum's exhibition, The Architect and the Industrial Arts, opened on February 12, 1929, and proved to be so popular that it was extended for five months beyond its scheduled closing date of March 24. Saarinen's flatware garnered a measure of critical acclaim. However, the pattern was not a commercial success and was withdrawn from the market after only a few years.
