393. Frank B. Hoffman (American, 1888-1958), "Mustang Roundup". c. 1930; oil/canvas, 23" x 31", signed. Highly important western painter and illustrator. Hoffman grew up in New Orleans, where his father owned racing stables. He was hired to make sketches for the Chicago American , and later became head of the art department there. He studied with J. Wellington Reynolds while in Chicago. In 1916, he went West to paint, and worked at Glacier National Park, where he met John Singer Sargent. Around 1920, he moved to Taos, and worked with Leon Gaspard. Hoffman was very successful as a western illustrator in the 1920s, working for many of the leading magazines of the period. He bought his own Hobby Horse Rancho, and raised horses, as well as other animals he used as models. He signed an exclusive contract with Brown & Bigelow in 1940, producing illustrations for their calendars. He exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Harwood Gallery in Taos, NM. 15,000-25,000
