363. William Coulter (American, 1849-1936), "Coastal Scene (possibly Hawaii)", c. 1885; oil/board, 12" x 20", signed. Coulter was an early San Francisco artist. He was a member of the San Francisco Art Association. He grew up on a ship, and by 1874, he was exhibiting regularly. He traveled to Hawaii in 1892, and returned several times after that. He painted almost exclusively marine subjects, and his work is in the collections of the Oakland Museum, Maritime Museum, and the U.S. Merchant marine Academy. 1200-1800
