345. Herman Dudley Murphy (American, 1867-1945), "Chinese Affairs", c. 1925; oil/canvas, 30" x 25", signed, titled, and dated; excellent original carved frame designed by Murphy. Murphy was an important figure in the Boston School of painting. He studied with Benson and Tarbell in Boston, and in Paris. Murphys still lifes of the 1920s are undoubtedly his most successful work. Murphy was heavily influenced by Whistlers painting style as well as his concern for frame design. Murphy opened a frame shop in Winchester, Massachusetts, with his friend, Charles Prendergast, in 1903 (they moved the business to Boston in 1905) called Carrig-Rohane. He exhibited at the Boston Art Club, National Academy of Design, St Louis Expo, Corcoran Gallery, North Shore Art Association, Art Institute of Chicago, and in Buck Hills, Pennsylvania. This is an excellent example of the artists work. 15,000-20,000
