| 907. Thomas Brownell Eldred (American, 1903-1993), "Abstract Composition", c. 1938; oil/canvas, 26" x 22", signed and dated, well framed. Eldred studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League (with Benton). During the 1930s, Eldred worked as an instructor at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, where he met Werner Drewes. Hilla Rebay acquired works by him for the Museum of Non-Objective Painting (Guggenheim). He traveled to Paris, and worked with Stanley Hayters group, Atelier 17. Eldred returned to the U.S. with Hayter in 1940, and opened a school. He exhibited throughout the 1930s-40s, at the Art Institute of Chicago, Detroit Museum of Fine Art, New School for Social Research, Edward Hopper House Foundation (Ntack, NY), Little Gallery (Chicago), and the Virginia Museum of Art (Richmond). His works are in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum and the Guggenheim Museum. 6000-8000 | ||||||
