870. Clarence Holbrook Carter (American, b. 1904), "Variety", c. 1939; oil/canvas, 20" x 24", signed. Important modernist painter. Carter studied at the Cleveland School of Art and with Hans Hofmann in Italy. He exhibited extensively from the 1920s-40s, at the Museum of Modern Art, Art Institute of Chicago, Metropolitan Museum, Corcoran Gallery, and the Detroit Art Institute.
