744. Fred Greene Carpenter (American, 1882-1965), "Women in a Landscape", c. 1929; oil/canvas, 28" x 24", signed and dated. Carpenter was one of Richard Miller’s closest students. Miller taught at the St. Louis School of Fine Art before traveling to France. Carpenter followed Miller to France and then returned to St. Louis to essentially replace Miller at the St. Louis School of Fine Art in 1904. His figurative subjects, strong brushwork, and unique palette reflect the influence of Miller, but Carpenter eventually moved to a more severe strain of modernism in his approach.
