686. Frank Mechau (American, 1904-1946), "Horses, South Park, Colorado" (study for the painting of the same title), c. 1937; pencil drawing/tracing paper, 24" x 29", unsigned. Mechau studied at Denver University and the Art Institute of Chicago in the 1920s. He exhibited from the early 1930s-40s, at the Denver Art Museum, Whitney Museum, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, Kansas City Art Institute, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Mechau executed several WPA murals, and during World War II, he traveled and worked as an artist-correspondent for Life magazine. Mechau was teaching at the Colorado Springs Fine Art Center when this work was executed, and then later at Columbia (1939-43).
