596. Charles Clarence Dawson (American, b. 1889), "The Broom Vendor", c. 1930; watercolor/paper, 15.5" x 10.5", signed. African-American painter and illustrator. Dawson was born in Georgia, but spent the majority of his career in Chicago. He studied at Tuskegee Institute, Art Students League (NY), and the Art Institute of Chicago. He exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, Smithsonian Institute, Howard University, Illinois Host House, National DuSaible Memorial Exhibition, Harmon Foundation, American Negro Expo (Chicago, 1940), and the Century of Progress. He illustrated books and worked in the WPA as a consultant in Chicago. 1500-2500
