Lot 465
465. William Eduoard Scott (American, 1884-1964), "It's Going to Come", c.1916; oil/canvas, 17" x 21",
signed, original black frame with artist's stylized initials carved into the surface. Important African-American painter.
Scott studied with Tanner in Paris, and at the Art Institute of Chicago. He traveled to the South, and this work was
most likely painted in Alabama. Harriet Warkel discusses this painting in her book,
A Shared Heritage: Art by Four African
Americans, and the duality of Scott's subject. When Scott arrived in the South he was witness to the
plight of rural blacks trying to survive overwhelming poverty, which is clearly portrayed in his paintings, and yet
the central figure of the woman in this work assumes a posture of strength and defiance. This work is pictured
in Warkel's book, which serves as a catalog to a museum exhibition by the same name. 20,000-25,000
