418. Ninghsia Design Kellei carpet, probably Europe, 1st Quarter 20th Century, this enigmatic carpet, while indisputably styled after Western Chinese Ninghsia carpets of the late 18th, early 19th centuries, exhibits a construction which I have not encountered previously. Pairs of alternating dark and light brown wefts cross the width of the carpet forming a two inch flat band selvage on each side and additionally providing a decorative effect in unpiled areas of the design. Otherwise, the decoration is typically Ninghsia, with pairs of stylized cloudband medallions on a yellow background, 4'6" x 13', excellent condition 5000-6000 Not Pictured:
