| 1100. Olaf Wieghorst (American, b.1899), "Afternoon Conversation", c.1945; oil/canvas, 20" x 24", signed. Important western painter. Wieghorst was a Danish immigrant living in New York until 1918, when his fascination with the American West prompted him to enlist in the calvary, and serve on the Mexican border. After three years, he worked as a ranch hand on the Quarter Circle 2C Ranch, whose brand became his artist's insignia. His father had been a painter, so Wieghorst had painted most of his life. In 1940, he obtained an agent and there was an almost immediate demand for his western illustrations. He eventually moved to California and concentrated on his artwork. The central image of most of his work is the horse, and although Wieghorst's style was impressionistic, the scale and accuracy of the subject matter was always maintained. 20,000-25,000 |
