1056. William Eduoard Scott (American, 1884-1964), "Haitian Courtyard", c.1920; oil/board, 20" x 15", signed. Important African-American painter. Scott was a close friend and student of H.O. Tanner. He worked in Chicago, Alabama, France, and Haiti. He exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, Harmon Foundation, Los Angeles Museum, American Negro Exposition, Smithsonian Museum, and Howard University. He was a member of the Hoosier Salon and the Chicago Art League. His work was recently showcased in a museum exhibition, "A Shared Heritage: Art by Four African-Americans". 3500-5500 |

1057. John W. Hardrick (American, 1891-1968), "Autumn Landscape", c.1940; oil/board, 22" x 32", signed. Important African-American painter from Indianapolis. Hardrick studied at the John Herron School of Art (Indianapolis). He exhibited at the Tenth Annual Exhibition of Works by Indiana Artists in 1917, with fellow African-American painter, W.E. Scott. He shared a studio with Hale Woodruff for a time in the 1920s, and exhibited with him in 1927 at the Art Instititue of Chicago. Hardrick also exhibited at the Second Annual Exhibition of Contemporary Negro Art in San Diego (1929). He was awarded grants by the Harmon Foundation and worked as a WPA muralist in 1933-34. 4000-5000 |
