1022. Emile Gruppe (American, 1896-1978), "Autumn Landscape", c.1940; oil/canvas, 16" x 20", signed, nice frame. Emile was the son of painter, Charles P. Gruppe. A good friend of Emile's father was landscape painter, John F. Carlson, who taught at the Art Students League and in Woodstock, NY during the summers. He worked very closely with Emile, and the boy's artistic talent developed rapidly. Emile began selling his work in the 1920s with great success. He moved to Rockport, MA, where he began painting his well known harbor scenes, and remained in the New England area his entire career. He made regular trips to Vermont in the Autumn to capture the colorful landscape in season. Gruppe's loose and colorful style of impressionism became a hallmark for the New England painting community. 4500-6500 |
