1001.Joseph Rustling Meeker (American, 1827-1889), "Southern Landscape", c.1877: oil/canvas, 20" x 9.5", signed and dated. Meeker studied at the National Academy of Design from 1845-46 with Asher B. Durand. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during the Civil War, and then went to St. Louis to establish his studio. During his stint in the Navy, he traveled south down the Mississippi River, to Louisiana, sketching the southern landscape and the bayous. When he returned to St. Louis after the war, he painted many works relating to his southern travels, and became known primarily for these works. 7000-9000 |

1002.Thomas Waterman Wood (American, 1823-1903), "Two Cents a Piece, Sir", c.1877; oil/canvas, 20" x 14", signed and dated, fine original frame; labels on verso from Robert Vose Gallery and New York City collectors, Patricia and George J. Arden. Well known genre painter. Wood studied with Chester Harding in Boston in 1846, before traveling to Europe. He eventually settled in New York City in 1867. Wood maintained a summer place in his hometown of Montpelier, Vermont and returned regularly to paint. Wood was at his best in the 1870s, and his refined style and sentimentality was very well received by Victorian-era America. 20,000-30,000 |
