982. Edmund Henry Wuerpel (American, 1866-1958), "Beech Trees", c.1914; oil/canvas, 17" x 23", signed with monogram; titled, dated, and signed again verso. Important tonalist painter. Wuerpel studied with gerome and Whistler in Paris. He was the Dean of the St. Louis School of Fine Art, and was well known for his atmospheric landscapes. He exhibited extensively, and won awards at the St. Louis Expo (1904) and the Pan-Pacific Expo (1915). Early, Arts & Crafts style work. 2000-3000 |

985. Charles Gruppe (American, 1860-1940), "Dutch Landscape", c.1926; oil/board, 8" x 10", signed and dated, excellent original hand-carved frame, Salmagundi Club label verso. In 1881, Gruppe traveled to Europe from Rochester, NY. He passed through the Netherlands and was so captivated by the country, that in 1889, he returned to live there for the next twenty years. He did not return to the U.S. until 1914, when WWI broke out in Europe. His palette and subject matter reflect the Dutch painting tradition. 1000-1500 |
