Marcel Breuer: the Bryn Mawr Furniture
Marcel Breuer, the famous Bauhaus trained architect, moved to America in 1937. Along with Walter Gropius, he was professor of architecture at Harvard. Together the two men were to have a wide influence over an entire generation of American architects. The following lots are from the first furniture commission Breuer received in America. In 1937, Bryn Mawr College commissioned Breuer to design the furniture for the new Rhoads Hall. The furniture was designed in 1938. The resulting designs expanded on his earlier European work. His innovative use of plywood construction was to gain widespread acceptance in the post-war period. The Bryn Mawr furniture is illustrated in Christopher Wilk's Marcel Breuer Furniture and Interiors, page 151. The designs have also been exhibited at MoMA and are in the permanent collection of the Brooklyn Museum.
