| 473. William Edward Norton (American, 1843-1916), lot of three male figure studies, c.1880; oil/canvas, 16" x 12", signed, “W.E. Norton/Atelier”. Norton grew up in Boston, and studied with George Inness. He went to sea as a teenager, and favored marine subjects throughout his career. In 1868, Norton went to Paris to continue his studies, and eventually settled in London. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and at the Paris Salon. He returned to the U.S. in 1893, and worked in New York until his death. He was a member of the Salmagundi Club and the Boston Art Club. He favored the Barbizon style of painting over Impressionism, which is evident in these works. 1800-2200 |
