608. George Herbert Baker (American, 1878-1943), "Winter along the Whitewater River", c.1924; oil/canvas laid down on board, 29.5" x 39.5", signed and dated. Baker was an important landscape painter from Richmond, Indiana. He was born in Muncie, IN and studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy. He exhibited at the Richmond Art Association, Hoosier Salon, and the Indiana State Fair. Baker was closely associated with T.C. Steele and John Elwood Bundy. Steele and J.Otis Adams painted in Brookville, while Bundy and Baker painted in Richmond, which was a little further north along the Whitewater River. He was prolific, and enjoyed great success in Richmond and in Indianapolis, and also taught several Indiana painters. This is a major work by this artist. 4000-6000
