601. Dale Bessire (American, 1892-1974), "November Haze", c.1931; oil/canvas, 25" x 30", signed, original frame, Hoosier Salon exhibition label verso. Bessire grew up in Indianapolis, and had some art training at the John Herron Art institute. He also studied at the University of Chicago, although he went there as a business major. He was married in 1913, and moved to Nashville, Indiana in 1914. His time in Brown County was divided between his orchard business and his art career. He became much more serious as a painter in the late 1920s, and was a founding member of the Brown County Art Gallery Association in 1926. He exhibited throughout the 1930s-50s at the Hoosier Salon; he also exhibited at the Chicago Gallery Association, Century of Progress (Chicago), H. Lieber Co. Gallery, Indiana State Fair, and the John Herron Art Institute, Bessire painted primarily landscapes, and his palette and brushwork are distinctive. Property of Oak Park River Forest High School.
