591. Ada Walter Shulz (American, 1870-1928), "The Yellow Hen", c.1926; oil/board, signed, original frame, nameplate from "Art Department, Women's Department Club, Indianapolis". Shulz began her studies at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1889, under John Vanderpoel. She traveled with Vanderpoel's class in the summer of 1892 to Delavan, Wisconsin, where she met her future husband, Adolph Shulz. In 1894, the two were married, and remained in Delavan for the next twenty years, although they began summering in Brown County, Indiana in the 1910s. They moved there permanently in 1917. Adolph specialized in landscape painting, and Ada chose the mothers and children of Brown County as her subjects. She favored painting outdoors, in bright sunlight, and her lush, expressive portraits of children reveal a tremendous sensitivity to the warmth and light of the Indiana summer. This is a rare and exceptional example of this artist's work.
Property of Oak Park River Forest High School.

Exhibited: Hoosier Salon, 1926 #257 Women's Department Club Gallery, Indianapolis 30,000-50,000

We are pleased to offer this important collection of paintings from the Oak Park River Forest High School. This collection includes several important works by Indiana painters, which are clearly the finest examples that have sold in many years. Many of these paintings were awarded the Daughters of Indiana Purchase Prize at the Hoosier Salon. The proceeds from the sale of these works is being used by the school to fund fine art scholarships, as well as build a new collection which is more diverse and urban-oriented.
