| 573. Astley D.M. Cooper (American, 1856-1924), "Tropical Ruins", c.1900; oil/canvas laid down, 14" x 20", signed. Cooper's grandfather, Major Benjamin O'Fallon was a close friend of George Catlin, and his fascination with Catlin's works inspired him to become an artist. He painted portraits of Indian chiefs in the 1870s, while living in St. Louis. He moved to California in 1883, and remained there until his death. He painted a wide variety of subject matter, and was a member of the San Francisco Art Association and the Salmagundi Club. 1000-2000 |
