| 562. Marie Danforth Page (American, 1869- 1940), "Mother and Child", c.1930; oil/canvas, 36" x 30", signed, Vose Galleries labels verso. Important Boston portrait painter, well-known for her works of mothers and children. She studied with Tarbell and Benson, at the Fine Arts School of the Boston Museum. Her work prior to 1917 was representational of the Boston School painters, but after that, it began to exhibit the influence of some of the European modernism, with brighter colors and patchy brushwork, while never abandoning the traditional subject matter. She was a member of the Boston Guild of Artists, National Academy of Design, Copley Society, and exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, Newport Art Association, and the Pan-Pacific Expo (San Francisco, 1915). Her work is in the collections of Erie Museum of Art, Harvard University, Montclair Art Museum, and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. 25,000-35,000 |
