| 557. George Hetzel (American, 1826-1906), "Woodland Pool", c.1880; oil/canvas, 17" x 24", signed. Well-known landscape painter. Hetzel studied at the Dusseldorf Academy. In the late 1850s, Hetzel joined a group of Pittsburgh painters at the mountain retreat called "Scalp Level", and began painting precise landscapes. Around 1870, his brushwork began to loosen up, and his style grew toward a tonalist aesthetic by the end of the century. 2500-4500 |
