| 551. (Elbridge) Wesley Webber (American, 1841-1914), "Venice at Night", c.1895; oil/canvas, 30" x 25", signed, excellent ornate original frame. Webber worked as a sign and carriage painter, before he enlisted in the Civil War. He was present at Lee's surrender, and made sketches of the event. In the late 1860s, he began painting in oil and established a studio in Boston. He was very successful by the 1870s, mostly for his marine subjects. He opened a studio in New York in 1892. He was a member of the Boston Art Club, and his work is in the collections of the Boston Athenaeum, Brooklyn Museum, New York Public Library, Peabody Museum, and the Portland (ME) Art Museum. 1500-2500 |
