| 718. Important George
Nelson Coconut Chair prototype, by Herman Miller, c.1955, original blue leather upholstery over a
fiber-reinforced plastic shell on a tubular chrome frame, 37.25"w
x 36"d x 40.5"h, excellent original condition 20,000-30,000
This high-back version of the Coconut chair was never produced for retail sale. This is the only example known to exist. The familiar triangular form, an icon of 20th century design, probably evolved from this prototype. This chair was sold at the Herman Miller retail store in Zeeland, Michigan in 1958. |
